Watch out for walkers – or join them – on Wednesday, April 24 during National Walk at Lunch (NW@L) Day.

NW@L Day is an annual event hosted by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) encouraging Nebraskans to take a few minutes, lace up their tennis shoes and go for a walk.

Walking provides a variety of health benefits, such as:

  • Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Improving memory and cognitive function
  • And lowering stress, according to a Consumer Reports article.

While walking at lunch is a good pick-me-up, walking anytime during the day provides health benefits, said Kathy Nellor, manager of wellness services at BCBSNE.

“Find a time in your day – morning, lunchtime or after work – that you can make being active a regular, consistent part of your life,” Nellor said.

BCBSNE encourages all Nebraskans to take the NW@L Day pledge and stride towards better health whenever and wherever they can on Wednesday, April 24.

Taking the pledge also benefits the community. BCBSNE will donate $20 for every group or organization and $1 for every individual who registers to Special Olympics Nebraska.

Additionally, BCBSNE will randomly choose one participating Nebraska school to receive a $1,000 grant for its physical education department.
