Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) recently received the Volunteer Organization of the Year Award from United Way of the Midlands (UWM) at the nonprofit’s annual meeting and luncheon.

UWM presents the award annually to a company that consistently strives to improve the community through volunteerism. Selection is based on the percentage of a company’s employees who participated in UWM events throughout the year, according to a UWM press release.

Over the past year, BCBSNE had:

• 430 employees participate in BCBSNE’s 2018 United Way fundraising campaign, which is an annual series of events hosted at Blue Cross Centre in October.
• 351 employees participate in volunteer events during Day of Caring, UWM’s annual volunteer service event pairing corporate teams and individuals with nonprofits in need of assistance.
• 79 employees read to children during Day of Action, a UWM event encouraging local students to read over the summer.

Susan Courtney, BCBSNE’s executive vice president of operations, business process and shared services, accepted the award at the luncheon on behalf of the organization.

“It’s humbling to see the difference BCBSNE and other local companies can make in the community by volunteering,” Courtney said. “We are proud to support the United Way and look forward to assisting the nonprofit and its mission going forward.”
