Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) partnered with YMCAs statewide in October to host free flu shot clinics for community members ages six and older.
This year, Hy-Vee Pharmacy, Think Whole Person Healthcare, Public Health Solutions and Red Willow Health Department administered flu shots to 421 clinic attendees.
At the Cooper Family YMCA in Lincoln, attendees highlighted how the clinics made it easier to stay healthy during cold and flu season. One attendee noted the clinics made getting a flu shot more accessible.
“It’s kind of wonderful, especially if you don’t have time or have limited insurance,” said Shelby Rood. “It’s nice to still be able to get one during this time of the year.”
BCBSNE hosts the clinics annually as part of its mission to champion the health and well-being of its members and the communities it serves. Over the past three years, the company has helped vaccinate more than 1,500 people.
“These clinics are an important part of keeping our communities healthy across the state,” said Dr. Josette Gordon-Simet, chief medical officer at BCBSNE. “We’re happy to continue championing health and well-being and helping Nebraskans through every stage of their health care journey.”
Twenty YMCAs teamed up with BCBSNE for the 2024 clinics in addition to one clinic held at Blue Cross Centre in Omaha. The continued success of the clinics is largely due to BCBSNE’s partnerships with the YMCAs.
“We receive a great deal of positive feedback from members,” said Samantha Huff, executive marketing director at YMCA of Lincoln. “This collaboration allows us to support public health efforts, ensure that more individuals receive their flu shots and contribute to a healthier, safer community for everyone.”
