Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) employees rounded the bases in June for Food Bank for the Heartland’s Strike Out Hunger competition. This year, BCBSNE supplied 15,747 meals for individuals and families in 93 counties across Nebraska and western Iowa.
Each summer, Food Bank for the Heartland puts on a friendly competition among Heartland businesses to help provide meals for those in need across the food bank’s service area. Participating companies are split into categories depending on their size.
BCBSNE took second place in the Wild Card division, which is for companies with over 1,000 employees.
BCBSNE employees came together for the competition by dropping food in donation boxes at the office, donating money and volunteering at the food bank.
“As we celebrate our second-place finish and the accomplishments of the businesses around us, our focus remains on driving meaningful change for Nebraskans,” said Chad Werner, BCBSNE’s executive vice president and chief financial officer. “BCBSNE’s participation reflects our deep-rooted commitment to championing the health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve.”
For over 40 years, Food Bank for the Heartland has been collaborating with over 500 network partners to provide food to those in need. Last year alone, the food bank helped supply 24.9 million meals across their service area.
“Every day, the food bank works hand-in-hand with the community to make sure Heartland families have access to the resources they need,” said Werner.
In total, Strike Out Hunger helped provide 450,104 meals to Nebraska and western Iowa residents.
