As an ongoing tribute to Steve Martin’s commitment to employee wellness, the company’s fitness center has been renamed the Steven S. Martin Wellness Center. “This is a very fitting tribute to Steve,” said BCBSNE Board Chair George Beattie at the unveiling presentation. “During his tenure as president and CEO, from 2002 to 2018, Steve was an avid champion for employee wellness.”

From the creation of the first executive wellness team to determine program direction and goals in 2004, to opening the first employee wellness center in the Mercy Road building in 2005, to the first BlueHealth Advantage Wellness Challenge in 2006—first for employees and later a similar program for external customers and groups in 2008—Steve’s leadership and commitment helped shape employee wellness.

Through the years, we’ve added online health assessments, onsite biometric screenings, free group exercise classes, personal training sessions, Weight Watchers at Work, mother’s rooms, lunch and learns, telephonic and digital health coaching – and the list goes on and on. Just last month, 886 employees, which is 75 percent of the company, completed health assessments. That’s proof that wellness is embedded in our culture here, thanks in large part to Steve.

The quality and effectiveness of our employee wellness efforts have been recognized nationally and locally. We’ve received the Wellness Council of America’s prestigious Platinum Well Workplace Award an impressive four times, in 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 – and are eligible to renew again in 2019.

In addition, we’ve received the Governor’s Wellness Large Grower Award in 2011, 2014 and 2017 – and can renew again in 2020.
