Lace up your sneakers and get moving – because Wednesday, April 26 is National Walk at Lunch (NW@L) Day.
NW@L Day is an annual event hosted by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) and YMCAs across the state encouraging Nebraskans to take a few minutes out of their day and go on a walk.
There are numerous health benefits to walking, including:
- Strengthening your heart
- Lowering your blood sugar
- Boosting immune function
“Making walking or any other exercise part of your daily routine provides many health benefits,” says Kathy Nellor, health transformation leader at BCBSNE. “A consistent, regular exercise routine can help improve your physical and mental well-being.”
BCBSNE encourages all Nebraskans to move toward better health by taking the NW@L Day pledge and finding time to walk for 30 minutes wherever they can on Wednesday, April 26.
Taking the pledge also means improving the community. BCBSNE will donate $5,000 to Special Olympics Nebraska (SONE) if 10,000 people take the NW@L Day pledge to participate.
Plus, BCBSNE will make a $1,000 donation to one randomly selected participating school’s physical education department.
Need a place to take a stroll? Meet fellow walkers at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village (2285 S. 67th St.) between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26.
