The Hastings Family YMCA recently received a $5,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) in support of the YMCA’s evidenced based blood pressure monitoring program.

“We want to thank BCBSNE for this grant which will help our community learn more about high blood pressure,” said Erika Knott, wellness director, Hastings Family YMCA. “We want to help our members and non-members manage their blood pressure and gain a better quality of life.”

The evidence-based Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program (BPSM) was piloted by the YMCA in 2017 with 149 participants. It is a four month, adult program that includes seminars, bi-weekly one-on-one visits and blood pressure checks.  It helps people manage their blood pressure, increases awareness of the triggers that elevate it, introduces heart-healthy eating habits and enriches communication with health care providers.

Research from the American Diabetes Association shows one in four Nebraskans have high blood pressure and only 50 percent are aware of it. Leaving it untreated can cause serious medical conditions.

Blood pressure checks and education will take place at Good Samaritan Village, the South Heartland District Health Department, and the YMCA. The program is open to members and non-members of the YMCA. Bi-lingual ambassadors will be available.
