Did you know that under most health plans, preventive visits are covered at 100%? Annual check-ups and screenings with your doctor can be critical in the prevention or early detection of many health conditions.

Make sure you are prepared for your annual check-up. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your visit.

  • Find a primary care doctor you are comfortable with and build a relationship with them. When you see the same doctor regularly, they will have a better understanding of your health. If you don’t have a primary care doctor, ask friends and family for recommendations. If you are a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska member, you can search for an in-network doctor and read patient reviews through your myNebraskaBlue.com account.
  • Bring a friend or family member you are comfortable with to your appointment. Your doctor can offer a lot of information, sometimes it hard to remember and, a second set of eyes and ears can be helpful. If you aren’t comfortable bringing someone with you, bring a notepad and take notes.
  • Be honest with your doctor. In order for them to treat you effectively, they need to know everything about your health history and any symptoms you may be having. Make sure to tell them about any over the counter or prescription medicines you are taking.
  • Most importantly, ask questions. It’s important for you to take charge of your health, and in order to do that, you need to be informed. Ask about any tests your doctor may recommend. Is it necessary? What will it tell us? When can I expect the results? If your doctor is prescribing medications, find out if there are any side effects and if the drug has any interactions with any other drugs or supplements you currently take.

Being prepared for your annual check-ups will ensure you get the most out of your visit.
