Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) recently donated $1,000 to Brady Public Schools’ (BPS) physical education department for the school’s participation in BCBSNE’s National Walk at Lunch (NW@L) Day event.
Each year, BCBSNE hosts NW@L Day on the last Wednesday of April to champion the health and well-being of its members and the communities it serves. The event invites community members across the state to walk for 30 minutes to stride toward better health. Walking provides various health benefits, such as reduced stress and increased energy levels, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In addition to promoting well-being, BCBSNE commits to donating $1,000 to one participating school’s physical education department. This year, BPS was randomly selected to receive the donation from a list of 47 participating Nebraska schools. Representatives from BCBSNE and BPS came together for a check presentation in front of the students who will benefit from the donation.
“National Walk at Lunch Day gives us an opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles in our communities,” said Dr. Josette Gordon-Simet, chief medical officer at BCBSNE. “Giving back to a school’s physical education department enables us to support educators as they help young Nebraskans build healthy habits.”
To support the health and well-being of its students, BPS will use the $1,000 donation to bring in new gym equipment, like pickleball sets, barbells, playground balls and more.
In addition to the donation to BPS, BCBSNE donated $5,000 to Special Olympics Nebraska through its 2024 NW@L Day event.
