Teana Hamilton came to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) in 2019 as part of the summer intern program.

“I had heard great things about BCBSNE,” said Hamilton, an intern in the claims department on the quality team. “I knew working here would be a great opportunity and experience for me to build on my skills. My goal is to eventually work in the information services department.”

She came to BCBSNE through Avenue Scholars, a program that guides students through high school, higher education and into careers, and has used this opportunity to grow.

“I have stepped out of my comfort zone since starting here,” said Hamilton. “Before working here, I did not have any experience in the health care industry. Now, I’m examining and reassigning claims or sending and updating reports, just to name a few of my daily tasks.”

She has had the experience of working in the office and from home.

“When I was at the office, I loved seeing my coworkers,” she said. “It’s a little different now working from home. I still get to see my coworkers, it’s just in a virtual setting instead of in person. I love working from home. I get to spend more time with my family, and the commute is great.”

This summer, she participated in BCBSNE’s first-ever intern project day that looked at the health of Nebraska.

“The intern project day was my favorite part of this summer’s program,” said Hamilton. “The interns worked hard and came together to present ways to improve the health of a chosen Nebraska city. I had so much fun with my group.”

Overall, she loves the community culture at the company and enjoys working with a few family members, who’re also employed at BCBSNE.

“My favorite experience at BCBSNE is being able to work for the same company as my mom and aunt,” she said. “When we were at the office, I got to meet so many people on the eighth floor. They made me feel at home and showed me so much love.”

Teana’s mother, Sheila Hamilton, and her aunt, Christina Dotson, also enjoy working with her.

“It’s such a blessing to be able to work with her,” said Hamilton, BCBSNE customer service representative. “I was so excited when she decided to work at BCBSNE. I knew this was a great company to work for and she would be well taken care of.”

“It’s nice seeing Teana and Sheila when we are in the office,” said Dotson, BCBSNE customer service representative.

The summer intern program ended for the year on Friday, Aug. 7, but Hamilton continues her work at BCBSNE in the claims department.
