Hugh Teitler has found that wellness extends far outside just being physically active.

“To be healthy, I need to pay attention to my mind, body and spirit,” said Teitler, vice president of human resources at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE). “While it is aspirational, I know it is important to spend time nurturing each in order to give myself the best chance of having total health.”

While Teitler only runs when being chased, he finds walking is a great way to be well not only physically, but also mentally.

“I walk every day, listen to podcasts that challenge my thinking and spend time nurturing my spiritual self,” he said. “While I find it quite challenging to try to get 10,000 steps in each day, I find walking not only helps battle my fight with my weight but also gives me the opportunity to think through and make decisions about a whole host of things that may be on my mind.”

He finds his eating habits are the biggest hurdle to his wellness.

“I also try to watch what I eat, and that is my real challenge,” Teitler said. “It is so hard to pass on pizza or a good cheeseburger, but I do try to incorporate fruits and vegetables in my diet.”

One of Teitler’s motivations to walk and eat right is to improve how he feels physically and mentally.

“I feel better about myself and more comfortable in my own skin,” he said. “I feel I am more alert and make better decisions when I am well. Eating right, exercising, providing opportunities to grow my mind and feed my spirit gives me stamina, energy and a positive outlook.”

However, his biggest motivation is his family.

“I want to be able to see my kids grow up and be able to share moments in their lives for many years to come,” said Teitler. “I also feel it is important to be a positive role model for my family.”

Teitler said BCBSNE supports him and all employees in their wellness journeys.

“We are our best selves when we are healthy in all aspects.” he said. “I am proud to work for a company that encourages employees to be healthy, happy and caring.”
