Beatrice Elementary School in Beatrice, Nebraska received new fitness equipment and curriculum with the help of an $18,000 Project Fit America (PFA) grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE).
PFA is a nonprofit organization that promotes innovative fitness education in elementary and middle schools nationwide, with a focus on creating physically educated children and empowering them to take charge of their health. Beatrice Elementary was selected for the grant after PFA conducted a statewide call for proposals from rural Nebraska schools with 40% or more students on free and reduced lunch programs.
As part of the grant, Beatrice Elementary received indoor and outdoor fitness equipment, a dynamic curriculum and activities to inspire students. The program goes beyond traditional fitness by fostering social, character and leadership skills, with PFA providing two years of support and on-site training for Beatrice Elementary physical education teachers.
“As champions for the health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve, we are committed to fostering environments where everyone can thrive through active lifestyles and positive health choices,” said Jay Warren-Teamer, executive director of the Nebraska Blue Foundation and director of diversity, equity and inclusion at BCBSNE.
The donation to Beatrice Elementary follows BCBSNE’s PFA curriculum and equipment donation in September to Bryan Elementary School in Lexington, Nebraska.
“Having the ability to support Beatrice, Bryan and other elementary schools across the state through Project Fit America helps us cultivate healthy habits that will benefit students and their families,” said Warren-Teamer.
During an opening day kick off and ribbon cutting event at Beatrice Elementary School on Monday, Oct. 28, students demonstrated how they will use the equipment.
“The support Blue Cross has given Project Fit America and the schools we work with has been priceless,” said Stacey Cook, executive director at PFA. “Their support helps us strengthen physical education programs, reaching students and their families across Nebraska. It’s so important for kids to learn healthy habits and fitness techniques at a young age, setting them up for a lifetime of well-being and active living.”
