Volunteers at Crofton’s Dam Race went all out, transforming water stations into themed experiences. From “The Waterboy” to “Rawr! Dinosaurs,” they handed out water in costumes, bringing energy and creativity to participants.

Each year, volunteers dress up and hold a competition of their own as they support athletes along the race route: Best Dam Water Station. Event organizers and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) are proud to announce the Kolterman and Hart families’ “Last Chance Saloon” as this year’s Water Station of the Year Award recipient.

The families put together a western-themed water station with signs motivating racers to finish the last few miles strong.

“The water station themes started getting competitive around year five of the race,” said Holly Wortmann, water station lead for Crofton’s Dam Race. “We embraced that spirit and created a Water Station Award. We’re always surprised by what they come up with.”

The award, now sponsored by BCBSNE, is determined by racers at the finish line using a digital poll. The winning station is announced at the awards ceremony and receives a custom basket of goodies and a plaque that hangs permanently at the Crofton Haymarket.

“Everyone really gets into it,” said Heidi Marsh, Crofton’s Dam Race director. “I think racers appreciate the fun — and safety — that comes with giant cheering sections along the route. I’m not sure all races offer that kind of hospitality like we do in Crofton.”

Crofton’s Dam Race, which includes a variety of triathlon options in addition to a bike race and half marathon, draws over 350 athletes from across the country. While the triathlon itself is unique, featuring kayaking on Lewis & Clark Lake instead of an open water swim like traditional sprint triathlons, organizers say it’s the small-town hospitality and fun add-ons that racers really talk about.

Crofton hosts the event with the help of over 150 volunteers and the local state park staff. Along the half marathon and bike route, families host over a dozen themed water stations ranging from Chuck Norris to Barbie. Last year’s winning station featured Dr. Evil and go-go girls from the movie “Austin Powers.”

“Supporting events that encourage Nebraskans to experience their state while staying active and engaging with their communities is an important part of what we do,” said Jay Warren-Teamer, community and strategic engagement leader at BCBSNE. “Crofton’s Dam Race does a fabulous job at incorporating all of those things into an event that champions the health and well-being of Nebraskans.”
